If you have open shelving in the kitchen, you may need a container to keep small things that you need handy. Look for something both attractive and plastic or at least washable. Airborne grease and steam may stain fabric or natural fiber baskets. You an also use flat, clear bins to store spice containers.

Storage containers in the living room can be quite large. For example, a wooden trunk under a window can serve both as a blanket storage spot and a window seat with the addition of a cushion. You can get creative with pretty boxes from craft stores and use these to store your needlework project, games and puzzles, or small pet toys. Set an old briefcase on a side table and load it with bar glasses and a small bottle of your favorite after-hours beverage.

Bedroom storage containers offer great creativity. Vintage suitcases can be loaded with off-season clothes, stacked, and turned into a bedside table. Just add a lamp and a phone charger! Baskets also look great in the bedroom. Take an old picnic hamper and roll up guest towels, some extra toiletries, and a sleeping mask to stash in the guest room for company. Collapsible fabric baskets work great on a set of bookshelves in a child’s room for small toys, from matchbox cars to stuffed animals.

Steam will be your enemy in the bathroom, so make sure the storage pieces you use are washable and breathable. Invest in open-weave plastic bins and baskets to store your makeup kit, small towels, or extra toiletries. Open weave mesh bins are a great spot for scented soaps. If you prefer something sealed, look for frosted glass storage jars for visual appeal and privacy.
